Sit vs. Set

When I taught English, occasionally I would give my students a worksheet on usage.  This “easy A” as I called it was a review of grammar rules and which word to use in the right context.  I would give out the paper and then go over all the words used with quick tips on how to easily pick out the right word.  Invariably, there were a few students that disregarded my review and began doing the worksheet.  And, invariably, those students did not usually get the easy A.

Isn’t it funny how we often feel that we don’t need a quick review.  “I don’t need this – it’s so easy!”  And then, after the fact, we realize that a review would probably done us some good.  Yea, sometimes that’s me.

Most people have to review lie vs lay or effect vs affect to ensure correctness, but what about sit vs set?  These two words are easy to put in the right sentence, but today as I was reading, I noticed set sitting quietly in a verse and realized that it’s a word that is easy to write, hard to do.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

                                                                            Colossians 3:1-2

Quick review here (yes, I know you probably don’t want it, but here it is) Sit means that you put your behind in a chair.  Set means to put something in a particular place or position.  In the verse above, we are to put something (our minds) in a position.

If you put these things before the brothers,  you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.

1 Timothy 4:6

The word doctrine means a particular principle, position, or policy taught. So when we set our minds on things above, we are putting into practice the things that we have been taught.

John 3: 16

2 Corinthians 5:21

John 14:6

John 15:5

These are but a few verses that help solidify our good doctrine.  As we read and study the Bible, we are being trained in these words and will be setting our minds on things above.

Are you in a Bible Study?

Are you reading the Bible?

I challenge you to do this if you are not.  By doing this, you will know the true position and be able to put it into practice.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for loving me so much that you sent your one and only son to die on a cross for my sins.  And that exchange gave me righteousness so that one day I can be with you. As I study the Bible, help me to know what I believe and set my mind on these things.  Let the peace of Christ rule in my heart every day.  And let me be thankful.

                                                            In Jesus name, Amen
