Falling into a New Season

As this busy, hot summer draws to a close, I see school zone lights flashing, days getting cooler (cool for TX = 75+), and most importantly, pumpkin spice products prominently displayed in the stores.  I think fall is upon us.

As the season begins to change, it is nice to reflect on how God’s word never changes.

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

                                                                                    Isaiah 40:8

Years ago, our church embarked on a read the New Testament through in a year plan.  I thought that was a great idea, as I had not read the Bible through in a long time.  So, I eagerly began.  Then life happened.  Bogged down in work and the busyness of life, I couldn’t keep up.  I didn’t want to skim and scan the chapters just to check off that day’s reading material.  That certainly isn’t comprehension – and I didn’t want to cheat God’s word.

So – I quit.  Of course, I felt bad about it – I don’t really think of myself as a quitter.    After a few weeks, I began thinking about the checklist of chapters.  Was there a test or quiz?  No. So, why don’t I just read it at my own pace.  What an idea!  I threw away the checklist and began reading again.  And, you know what?  I did it.  It took me a year and a half.  After that, I headed straight to the Old Testament.  And, a little over a year and a half later and I’m in Zechariah.  One more chapter and I have finished reading the entire Bible.

Reading and meditating daily – even if it was a chapter or two, renews my mind and teaches me how to be a faithful servant.  It has helped God’s word sink deeply into my heart and mind and showed me how to be a doer of the word – not just a reader of the word.

You wanna know a secret?  After I finish Malachi, I’m going to do it all again – starting with Matthew.  After all, I may have missed something important.  You want to do it with me??  Don’t worry, I won’t make any quizzes or tests.  Maybe we can sit down and talk about it with a pumpkin spice latte and a cinnamon scone!

PS. For those of you who can daily read the Bible in one year – I am super proud of you.  Let’s keep reading together and God’s word will light our path.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your words, which are true, alive, and active. Each day as I read, teach me, correct me, and train me in righteousness that I will be equipped for all good things.  And at all times, let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.                                   Amen.
