Rain I’m not talking thunderstorm, hail, tornado rain, – I’m talking slow, intermittent, revitalizing rain. The rain that refreshes and restores. Last Saturday, I grabbed my coffee and headed outside to drink in the effects of the previous day’s rain. Crisp, clean air. Hummingbirds and deer drinking and eating. The land of the prickly pear revived.
I’m drinking it in, too. Not just the coffee, but the healing power that rains bring to us. As I watch the hummingbirds drink the nectar from feeders and flowers, I am reminded of this:
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103
Reading the Psalms is like a refreshing rain. It heals me like rain heals the earth. Whenever I need a calming word, a restoring word – I head straight to the Psalms. I drink it in just like the hummingbirds drink the nectar from the feeders.
So, instead of adding another paragraph or two about rain, hummingbirds, and Psalms, I’m going to let it rain right here – with a few verses that are sweeter than honey and heal the heart.
…what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him.
Psalm 8:4
I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the lord, be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:13-14
You hem me in – behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Psalm 139:5
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Psalm 91: 4
Heavenly Father,
I thank you for the Psalms – how sweet they are to me and refresh and restore me. Thank you for your goodness, for hemming me in, for protecting me. Help me to wait on you, O Lord for you are my strength and my shield. Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths, and guide me all the days of my life.
Amen.
A few of my favorite songs inspired by the Psalms. No, you don’t need an umbrella. Just dance and sing in the rain!
