One day children were brought to Jesus in the hope that he would lay hands on them and pray over them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus intervened: “Let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me. God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.” Matthew 19:13-15
Part of our worship this past Sunday was our children’s choir. Young kids, in their Sunday best, some with hands in pockets, some a little nervous, all excited and praising our Lord.
The anthem of praise: “You Are God Alone.” It was heartfelt, worshipful, and worthy of honor to our Lord. And the words – full of Biblical Truth. As they were singing, I listened to the lyrics. Those words that imparted such theology. Did those children grasp the full meaning behind the song. Do we?
You are God alone from before time began
You were on Your throne
You are God alone and right now
In the good times and bad
You are on Your throne
And you are God alone
That childlike faith that trusts and hopes – believes and knows. The Kingdom of God is made up of people like these. And yet, so many times we as adults struggle to be content and just believe that God is God alone, that He is sovereign and knows all that is going on, that He is all we need.
In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis writes that Christ “wants a child’s heart, but a grown-up’s head. He wants us to be simple, single-minded, affectionate, and teachable, as good children are; but He also wants every bit of intelligence we have to be alert at its job, and in first-class fighting trim.”
Intelligence means that we need to be eating solid food – not milk as babies do. Daily diving into the Word and living it out in all that we do. Yes, some days it is a struggle, but Jesus understands struggle. He lived it. Childlike faith means that we can humbly ask for help and believe that God will answer because that’s just the way it is.
You’re the only God whose name and praise will never end
You’re the only God who’s worthy of everything we can give
You are God and that’s just the way it is
Unchangeable, unshakable, unstoppable
That’s what You are
That’s who He is. And we are children of God. That’s who we are.
