Capital Letters

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

                                                                        Zephaniah 3:17 ESV

For a very short period in my life, I worked in a legal office.  It was an adjustment for a teacher of English who loves flowery, descriptive sentences to transition to short, succinct statements – hence, it was a short period!

Working on a contract one afternoon, I was intrigued by the use of capital letters in certain portions of the document.  In asking about this, I found out that this is how the legal world defines terms.  At the beginning of a contract, important information is put in quotations and capitalized and it is defined for the rest of the document.  It defines the term and sets it apart from something else.  It makes it clear.

This reminded me of how the name of the Lord is sometimes capitalized in the Old Testament.  In Exodus 3, Moses asks God what his name is, so that he can tell the Israelites who sent him.

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”

“I AM” in Hebrew translates to English as the letters YHWH. To distinguish it from other names of God, the translators of the Bible used “LORD” to refer to YAWEH – I AM.  The name God called Himself.  A clear, defined term.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

                                                                           Romans 1:20

God has made Himself known – His attributes, His power, His divine nature since the beginning of time and continuing through the end of time.  He has defined himself.  Capital letters.  He has made this clear.

As we walk through this life, are we making clear to others that God is LORD of our lives?  Are we defining Him in our words and actions?  Do others know that your God is the God of all creation?

A Mighty One who saves

Who Rejoices over you with gladness

Quiets you by his love

Exults over you with loud singing

Do others know this?

Define it.  Make it clear.

He is LORD of all.
